About The Daily Varnish

The Daily Varnish is a nail polish blog started on November 9, 2009 and run by two best friends that just happen to share a love of nail polish.

What makes this blog different? This isn’t a nail polish blog where you’ll find detailed reviews of new collections. Nor will you find detailed descriptions of specific colors, or pictures in every light from every angle. What you will find is what products we really use. What polishes we are actually wearing and our honest thoughts and opinions on all of it.

Please check out our less formal blog: The Daily Varnish Extra. After all, sometimes we do talk about things other than nail polish.

  1. This is really cute & unique. I need nailpolish that doesn’t cheap too easily. What brand have you guys found to work best for you?

    • For me – I think OPI is the best – but it also depends on what top coat (and/or base coat) you use – I absolutely love Seche Vite but Alli swears it makes her nails chip faster so I’m pretty sure she’d completely disagree.

      • OPI lacquer and Seche Vite base and top coat are always what I recommend, too! By far the best in my opinion.

  2. I’ve tried Seche Vite and found it REALLY sticky, thick and goopy. 😦 I like Nailtiques 2+ as a base AND top coat. Or just a base coat with Orly’s Sec’n Dry as a topper. It claims to “dry every layer of polish”, instead of just the top layer. And in my experience, it works REALLY WELL!

    • Alli doesn’t care for SV – but I really really like it – I think it’s just an individual preference type thing 🙂 I use Seche Restore to help thin out SV.

    • It’s possible what you tried was old; if it’s fresh and hasn’t been sitting on a shelf forever, it’s not thick, but I’ve found that it get’s really thick before I can get anywhere near finishing a bottle… But that also translates into it being a very quick drying top coat!

  3. Your site is so helpful! Just one question about matte top coats: do you guys prefer Butter London’s Matte Finish or Essie’s Matte About You? I’ve been thinking about mattifying some of my summer brights and cannot, for the life of me, find a side-by-side comparison 😦 Thanking you in advance 😀 x

    • I have both and I honestly cannot tell a difference between the 2. A matte topcoat is a matte topcoat. I’d go with the Essie just because it’s cheaper.

    • Went with Essie for a mini manicure, considered it a try-before-you-buy but before I got around to getting it, I found another one that was cheaper… Have you ever tried GOSH Matt Effect top coat? No chips (so far), minor tip wear, going on three days! Withstood moving day (furniture, boxes, more furniture) plus the days of packing up stuff before that. 🙂

      • Gosh isn’t available in my area.

Hard Candy and Revlon also make matte top coats that do the same thing.

  4. Since you girls love nail polish so much I thought you’d like to check out this YouTube account. It’s amazing nail art that’s simple to do!

  5. Essie works best for me, it doesn’t chip for 1 week and i dont use topcoat or basecoat. OPI chips super quick on me
