Lex Cosmetics – Tuilleries

Lex - TuilleriesI’m writing this on Sunday night and I have to admit that the events over the last 24 hours have left me a little melancholy. For many reasons, I’m sure I’m not the only one who went looking for a cheer-me-up polish this morning.I turned on my polish radar and almost immediately grabbed Tuilleries by Lex Cosmetics.

Tuilleries is a delicate sheer pink jelly with orange, magenta, and silver hex glitter with much smaller glitter in the same colors throughout (FYI: It’s same gorgeous glittery goodness as Dying Embers).

So… why did I pick Tuilleries as my pick me up? (A) Really? Look at it! (B) Tuilleries was created by Amanda (The Nail Polish Enthusiast) – I’ve gotten to know her on twitter and I’m so lucky! She’s so genuine and down to earth and all around awesome. (C) It feels good to give back, this polish benefits lung cancer research. It’s a cause that’s very close to my heart.

Check below for some more pictures and maybe a few random thoughts of the day.

Happy Monday.

Lex Cosmetics Dying Embers

Lex Cosmetics Dying EmbersWe are big fans of Lex Cosmetics around here. It’s a unique company as it lets customers submit an idea for a nail polish color. The ideas are then put up for a vote and the winning concept becomes a nail polish. As if that wasn’t enough, $1 from each bottle of polish purchased goes to the charity of the creators choice. Pretty cool, right?

Katie was browsing the Lex website contemplating whether or not to place an order. She asked me whether or not I was interested in any of the polishes. Dying Embers immediately caught my eye. The description described Dying Embers as  a “dark shimmery grey with a red-orange glow.” Not only did it sound interesting it sounded like nothing else I have in my collection.

Dying Embers is a brown leaning gray jelly with large orange-red, purple and silver and small square silver and orange-red glitter. Sounds complicated but to summarize: GORGEOUS!

I used two coats in my swatches and was more than happy with the results. That being said, I wanted to try this over another polish to see how it fared. I used  one coat of Dying Embers over Essie Smokin’ Hot to create an accent nail. I loved the result. Really gorgeous.

There are additional swatches of Dying Embers below the jump as well as swatches of it layered over Smokin’ Hot.

Katie’s Top 10 of 2012!

katietopten2Happy New Years Eve!!!

I can’t believe it’s time for a top 10 already! I really feel like I just pressed “publish” on my Top 10 from 2011! Personally, 2012 has absolutely flown by and it’s been an up and down crazy ride but all in all I’d give it a thumbs up.  Anyways, I’m really excited to share my favorites of the year with you!

Though I didn’t realize it when I was whittling down my list from 15 to 10, it seems my favorites for 2012 are for the most part filled with sparkle, shimmer, and shine – which matches my feelings on 2012, and represents my hope for a beautiful 2013. I hope you enjoy!

I’d absolutely love it if you left your Top 10 in a comment below!

Perfect Pair: Lex Cosmetics Himalayas & Arcoiris

If you caught my tweet then you know this past Saturday night on my nails there was a Lex Cosmetics party happening. I’ve been dabbling in dark green polish as the weather has gotten cooler. Estee Lauder has a huge ad in my local mall feature just a bottle of deep green polish so thinking green polish is going to be a trend come winter I’ve been revisiting some of my favorites.

On Saturday I was wearing Lex Cosmetics Himalayas which I love. It’s a fabulous deep green creme that really is quite unique. But I was going out Saturday night and wanted to add some glitter to my manicure. This seemed like the perfect excuse to use Lex Cosmetics Acroiris. I wasn’t sure at first if a rainbow glitter would look good over a deep green but turns out I loved the combination.

As always, there are more swatches below the jump. The macro shots really show how pretty Acroiris is!

Lex Cosmetics – Acroiris

Ever since Alli posted her gorgeous mani: Acroiris over Essie’s No Place like Chrome -I knew I had to try it over gold. I was already wearing one of my favorite gold polishes, OPI’s Glitzerland, on Saturday so it was the perfect opportunity to try it out!

Unlike Alli who has a cool skintone leading her to use silver as a base, I used gold to compliment my warmer skintone.

I absolutely love that Acroiris has 3 different sizes of glitter all showing off their sparkle in purple, silver, orange, yellow-gold, blue and green. Even though the predominant color in  Acroiris is silver, it looked great against my light gold background.

This may just be the polish that renews my love for glitter. I’ve stayed away from glitter for several months now. Mostly because of my middle nail split (we all know that glitter is a bear to remove!) and partially because I was preferring shimmers and cremes.

Lex Cosmetics – Seattle Sunshine

In case you missed Alli’s Must Have Polishes for Fall 2012 – it’s a must read and helped me choose to put on Seattle Sunshine on this gorgeous Fall day!

My next several posts will include either polishes from Fall collections or on trend colors! Pantone’s name for this season’s fall is titanium, and Seattle Sunshine is right on target for Fall 2012.

We’re huge Lex Cosmetics fans around here and I bought this last spring using the Groupon ($15 for $30) that was offered last year. Seattle Sunshine is a true light grey creme and it applied like a dream so smooth and perfect! I started off with OPI’s Ridge Filler on my middle finger and OPI’s Natural Nail Base Coat on my other four fingers. I used two coats of Seattle Sunshine and topped it off with a coat of Seche Vite.

Seattle Sunshine was created by Jamila in honor of Seattle’s notorious overcast skies. $1 from the sale of each bottle goes to TreeSwing. You can purchase Seattle Sunshine on the Lex Cosmetics website for $10. If you’d like to learn more about Lex Cosmetics and founder Alexa click here.

Since Fall is officially here, what colors are you most excited to wear?

Lex Cosmetics Arcoiris

As you may know, we’re big fans of Lex Cosmetics around here. It’s a very unique company. All the nail polishes are the brain child of polish lovers that submit their ideas. Those ideas are then voted on and the winning idea is made into a polish. Not only are the polishes great, but a dollar from every bottle of polish sold it donated to a charity of the creator’s choice. Katie was lucky enough to have her color idea, Atlantic, made into a polish.

Lex’s most recent polish is Arcoiris (aka Spanish for rainbow). It’s basically fun in a bottle! Acroiris has 3 different size glitters of various colors suspended in a clear base. Each size of the glitter has purple, silver, orange, yellow-gold, blue and green glitter with silver being the most dominate color. Most of the glitter is the smaller size, followed by the medium glitter then the large. The glitter is this polish is not dense but isn’t sparse either. I used two coats in all my swatches. Below the jump I posted a picture of this polish on a white piece of paper so you can really see the different types of glitter.

When I posed a picture of Arcoiris in the bottle over on TDV’s Facebook page a couple of you posted potential dupes. When it comes to these rainbow glitter polishes none of them are 100% dupes of eachother. The glitter colors, sizes and shapes never match up exactly. That being said, this is similar to Deborah Lippmann Happy Birthday, OPI Rainbow Connection, Nicole by OPI Rainbow in the S-Kylie, Sephora by OPI Spark-tacularm Milani Gem and wet n wild fastdry Party of Five Glitters (did I leave any out!?).

All of these rainbow glitter polishes are meant to be used as a top coat though I did swatch Arcoiris on my bare nails so you could really see the glitter (my nails are still recovering from the CND Stickey incident, so I apologize!). I didn’t wear this glitter on it’s own, I wore it over Essie No Place Like Chrome and I got SO many compliments! The girl ringing me up at the grocery store told me she loved my nails because they were so eye catching.

So, below the jump there are a slew of pictures, including Arcoiris over No Place Like Chrome. If you’re unfamiliar with the Lex Cosmetics bottle make sure to check it out below the jump as well. It’s so pretty. This is definitely a polish I will be displaying on my DIY nail polish rack!

Lex Cosmetics polishes can be purchased on the Lex Cosmetics website and make sure to check out the Lex Facebook page which Alexa is always updating.  Also check out some of our other Lex reviews here.

Katie’s Top 10 of 2011

It feels like I just posted my Top 10 of 2010. Top 10 of 2011, just isn’t as catchy, should I have done my top 11?  I felt like every time a new collection came out this year – it didn’t wow me – but going over the last year of posts there are plenty of stand out polishes and it’s been difficult narrowing it down to just 10…

Lex Cosmetics – Atlantic

I am so excited about this nail polish for a million reasons! This is the latest addition to the Lex Cosmetics nail polish collection, Atlantic (in fact – it’s gone up on the site since I’ve been writing this post). After Alli got the chance to review Himalayas – I looked into Lex Cosmetics and was really blown away by the concept for two reasons. First, people submit their ideas for nail polish and it’s put to a vote – the winning nail polish gets created – super cool right? But it doesn’t stop there! $1 from the sale of every bottle goes to a non profit organization of the creator’s choice!

So of course I immediately tried to start thinking of ideas. I wanted it to be something important to me and my life but also that could be tied to a great cause. I spent time thinking about various things in nature, and it hit me – the ocean. I spent lots of summers on the beach and the ocean to me is one of those awe inspiring things that I knew I’d love to see reflected in a nail polish.

So finally after lots of thought and some rewording I finally submitted my idea & was ecstatic to see it up for the vote a month or so later. And here’s when I say thank you to everyone who voted! I won and I worked with Alexa to fine tune things – and she was fantastic, we emailed back and forth quite a bit and I could not have asked for a nicer more wonderful person to work with through this process.

Flash forward to last Friday, I got this beauty in the mail. I was insanely giddy about the color – I love it. It’s a gorgeous teal creme that’s bright and vibrant absolutely perfect for summer. Now the color is great but how about the formula? A+ on the formula – no I’m not just saying this because it was my idea – in fact I was kind of worried about what I’d write if it was awful – the formula rocks. It’s so pigmented that you can get away with just using ONE COAT. I used two because I’m not the most patient polisher in the world. It doesn’t hurt that the bottle is cute and the top is even cuter.

I’d like to tell you a bit about the charity that I chose – originally I’d chosen The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, but after some thought I decided on the Oceanic Preservation Society. OPS is doing some great things to save the dolphins in Japan – if you haven’t already I highly suggest watching The Cove.

If you’ve made it all the way down here – bless you – and Alexa has been awesome enough to give you all a coupon which I will post as soon as I get it. In closing, If you have a cool idea for a nail polish – go! submit it! – and support a cause that’s important to you at the same time! The latest winner is Seashell submitted by Sarah and I really can’t wait to see it!

EDIT: Coupon Code is n4i2g5g – it’s 3 dollars off Atlantic!

Happy Almost Friday!

Lex Cosmetics Himalayas

Lex Cosmetics HimalayasI love new nail polish brands! Lex Cosmetics is a really unique nail polish brand. The main reason being….all the colors are created by lacquer lovers like me and you. You’re probably wondering how that works. Well, anyone can submit a color idea. If that idea is picked, it is them put up for a vote. The winning color is then made into a polish.

I really love this idea because I cannot count how many times I’ve seen anything from the color of a car to the color of the sky and thought “hey, that would be an awesome nail polish color!”.

Anyway, onto the polish at hand. Himalayas is a very dark grayed out green. At first glance I thought this may be somewhat similar to Orly Enchanted Forest. I was wrong! I have nothing even close to this in my collection. This green leans towards blue which is what makes it unique.

Application was great. I used only 2 coats and I had streak free, opaque coverage. I was impressed with the wear of this polish. I used Essie Fill the Gap! as a basecoat and Essie Good to Go! as a topcoat. I’m on day 2 right now with zero chipping or tip wear. Keep in mind, especially with dark polishes, I usually only wear them one day because I can’t stand obvious tip wear!

Lex Cosmetics nail lacquer is Bad3Free and can be purchased from lexcosmetics.com. They are $10 a piece. A dollar from each purchase is donated to a charity of the color creator’s choice.

Anyone else think this is as cool of an idea as me? Katie has already submitted a color idea (something to do with a sunset and the Atlantic ocean….). I’m looking forward to seeing if her idea gets picked!
