NYC Extra Shiny Top Coat

NYC Extra Shiny Top Coat bottleIt’s no secret that I’m kind of addicted to trying different top coats. My all time favorite top coat is Essie Good To Go! though I’m currently using Rush 60 Second High Speed Top Coat. It’s very close to the Essie top coat but much less expensive.

I was browsing the cosmetics aisle at Rite Aid a while ago and saw that NYC had a (very) inexpensive top coat in their Long Wearing nail enamel line. I’ve had extremely good luck with  polishes from the Long Wearing line so for less than a buck I figured I’d give the Extra Shiny Top Coat a try.

Initially, I was pretty happy with this top coat. It’s not a thick top coat but it’s not thin either. It goes on smooth and while it’s not a fast drying top coat, it dries fairly quickly to a super shiny finish. I’ve had no trouble with this causing shrinkage or bubbling or any of the other usual top coat issues.

Fast forward to 24 hours later and that’s where the problems begin. This top coat will cause any polish that is not glitter based to crack. Yes, crack! It’s so frustrating to have a lovely looking manicure but to have cracks on the nail.

This happened to me many, many times. I wanted to test this top coat with every finish of polish I could. Over cremes this is particularly a problem. But metallics and shimmer finishes aren’t much better.

I will say this is a great top coat to use over glitters. I’ve not experienced the cracking issue and since it’s inexpensive and not super thin it’s a great top coat to layer over those glitters that just eat top coat.

I’ll be keeping this around for swatching and glitter polishes but otherwise it won’t be getting much use.

Below the jump there are photos of a 24 hour old manicure. I used Essie Smokin’ Hot and added a glitter accent nail using Lex Cosmetics Dying Embers. Dying Embers has a glitter base and therefore did not crack. The rest of the nails show obvious cracking.

I do want to point out I’m not banging my nails around to make the top coat crack. The cracking occurs no matter how careful I am with my nails!

  1. Thanks for the review! That cracking is weird. What’s up with that?

  2. That IS weird. I’ve had that problem a couple times, but I think it’s just random in my case because there doesn’t appear to be a pattern to it. My favorite top coat so far is INM Out the Door. I HAVE to have fast dry; I can’t stand waiting. I buy a big 2.5oz or so bottle from Sally’s and match it with a similarly-sized bottle of CND Stickey Base Coat. It’s my favorite combination ever.

    • I’ve used Out the Door in the past. It’s very similar to Essie Good to Go and Rush 60 Seconds. It was my HG top coat before I discovered Rush which is just slightly cheaper at Sally’s than OtD.

I’m also a fan of the sticky base coats though I’ve been testing out a super cheap alternative to CND. So far so good!

How strange! I’ve never experienced cracking like that with a TC. Right now I’m using Nails Inc. Kensington Caviar Topcoat – I love how fast it dries but I occasionally end up with little bubbles in it once it dries. Trying to figure out how to combat that…

    • Isn’t it though? I thought I was going crazy before I figured out the problem with my top coat!

I haven’t tried the Nails Inc top coat. I do my nails way too much to spend that much on a TC! Good luck with your bubble problem 🙂

  4. i have the NYC extra tiny top coat as well and experienced the same thing. i don’t even touch it now as ( not sure if describing correctly) the top coat is now stringy when i try to use kinda like a glue.

  5. I can’t say I’ve ever seen a polish do that before (except where your nail has gotten bent, but that’s physics, not a polish issue). Weird!

    • The first time I had a cracking issue with this polish I assumed I had bent my nail or the like and caused it to crack. Not the case!

  6. That is the strangest thing – I’ve never had that happen before (mind you I’ve never used that top coat). That would make me so angry if it cracked the colour right after I did my nails!

  7. I’ve never tried this particuler line of NYC polish colours before, but In A New York Minute line is pretty good; it literally dries within 2 minutes. I use “Invisible” in lieu of an actual top coat, and it really helps my manicures last!
