Alli’s Top 10 of 2012

6o3jmoIt’s that time of year! Time to wrap up 2012 and get ready for 2013. It always feels like it gets harder to pick my top 10 polishes every year. I started out with 16 polishes but finally managed to dwindle the list down to 10.

The surprising thing about this year’s list is the vast majority of them are from the drugstore. I do think this was the year of drugstore polish. Lower end brands have stepped up their game not only with nail polish, but with makeup in general.

My top 10 polishes released in 2012 are below the jump. If you missed my top 10 from 2010 and 2011 you can check those out here and here.

Make sure to leave your top 10 in a comment below!

Essie No Place Like Chrome

Essie No Place Like Chrome: I feel like I talked about this polish constantly the second half of the year! This was released in July as part of Essie’s Mirror Metallics collection and ever since then it has been a constant on my nails whether on its own or in nail art. To wear on this polish it does take a bit of prep work but using this tip makes things alot easier. This was by far the most diverse nail polish in my collection this year. I used it in no less than 13 manicures since its release.

Pixi Evening Emerald

Pixi Evening Emerald: Pixi entered into the nail polish game this year and they hit a home run with Evening Emerald. This polish was released for Fall 2012 and while I didn’t immediately fall in love with it in the bottle once I had it on my nails I was won over! With emerald being the it color of 2013 I see myself getting quite a bit of wear out of this polish next year!

Spoiled by wet n wild I'm Ba-roque

Spoiled by Wet n Wild I’m Ba-roque: Wet n Wild’s Spoiled line is one I have a serious love/hate relationship with. I have absolutely LOVED every single Spoiled polish I have ever tried. The colors are gorgeous and wear extremely well. The hate part comes from the brush situation. Some of the brushes are fine. Some of the brushes are terrible. But despite the brush situation I wanted to include I’m Ba-roque in my top 10 because the color is gorgeous. It’s subtle but not boring. And there is a serious lack of that in the nail polish world!

SinfulColors Rain Storm

SinfulColors Rain Storm: I had a hard time picking between my SinfulColors favorites this year. They released so many amazing polishes. But Rain Storm was my favorite. I’m a sucker for a good dusty blue and this one was just perfection.

JulieG Sunset Kiss

JulieG Sunset Kiss: JulieG is another new nail polish line to hit the drugstores this year and I’ve quickly become a fan! Sunset Kiss is my favorite polish I’ve tried from the line so far. It’s a gorgeous metallic/foil red that just glows!

Essie Mojito Madness 2012

Essie Mojito Madness: You know how sometimes a song will define a certain time in your life and every time you hear it you think back to that time? Well, Mojito Madness does that for me! I was constantly rocking this polish over the summer. Essie released this polish as part of their Bikini So Teeny collection and it was quite the rage. It’s just the perfect kelly green.

Julep Robin

Julep Robin: Robin is this year’s version of Finger Paints Tiffany Imposter (aka China Glaze For Audrey). It’s not a straight up Tiffany blue but a slightly darker and slightly more blue version that felt new and fresh. It’s a great polish to rock during the warmer months and I liked that it was an unexpected color but not too out there.

Color Club Metamorphosis

Color Club Metamorphosis: This year Rite Aid began to carry Color Club. I was super excited when I saw the Take Wing collection. All the polishes looked gorgeous but Metamorphosis really stood out. It was unique and complex. It’s one of those polishes that when you have it on you can’t stop looking at your nails.

Finger Paints Grape Gumball

Finger Paints Grape Gumball: This was a bit of a dark horse to make it onto my list. Grape Gumball was released as part of Finger Paints spring 2012 Gumdrops & Lollipops collection. In the bottle it doesn’t look like anything particularly special but on the nail it’s just gorgeous. It’s this year’s version of Essie Smooth Sailing.

OPI I Don't Give a Rotterdam

OPI I Don’t Give a Rotterdam: Shockingly enough this is the only OPI polish to make this year’s top 10. OPI’s Holland collection was by far my favorite collection they released this year and I Don’t Give a Rotterdam is by far my favorite from that collection. The gold shimmer is subtle yet makes this polish unique.

I always disqualify polishes from being on  my top 10 if there is an easily available dupe, but I do like to include them as honorable mentions. Dupes are in parenthesis.

Honorable mention: SinfulColors Winter Wonder (OPI On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), Jesse’s Girl Carolina Beach (JulieG Bikini), MAC Morange (NYC Traffic Jam Orange), wet n wild Speak When Spoken To (China Glaze Liquid Crystal)

  1. Good picks all of ’em! I am thinking this Julep looks a lot like the Essie winter 2012 release Call My Chauffeur (or something like that…I bought it but have not worn it yet – seems like of off for a winter shade right now at least). I looked and looked for Rainstorm – gave up and then finally months after it released my Rite Aide got a whole display in and mine never gets but maybe 4 new display Sinful collections in a yr! I also got so excited when I saw the Take Wing collection at Rite Aide and thought we would get CC all the time – I have only seen that and a few scattered others since then at my Rite Aide – I would love love if they carried ’em all the time. I had to go to the secondary market to land the Turq one to complete my Take Wing collection – love the glass fleck in all of those! I need to pick up some of the great shades that Julie G has put out…I have fallen hard for a # of em in photo!

    • I’m actually quite confused by the Rite Aid/Color Club thing. Maybe they were just feeling the market out? I wish they’d just start carrying Color Club as a whole. It’d be alot less confusing!

  2. What an awesome Top 10!!! I love the 2 Essie’s and Rainstorm best. I don’t want to spoil my Top 10 (I could never ever possibly cut down to 10, 20 was the best I could do ;-)) I am posting about them at the end of the week. Oh and the Pixi is a STUNNER xxx

  5. It would be hard to do a whole top ten but I can definitely say my favorite polish of this year (that I’m wearing RIGHT NOW) is Butter London Jack the Lad. It’s amazing. I put it on even thought I’m just with my family hanging out and I stare at it while we watch tv. It’s just that gorgeous. I also love Mojito Madness and I Don’t Give a Rotterdam, great picks!
