Nail Art: The Sideways French Manicure

The French manicure is a classic. A classic that isn’t exactly…timeless. Due to this the French manicure is constantly being reinvented; whether it be mixing textures, colored tips or even crackle tips. But I must say, this might be my favorite reinvention yet!

This version of the French manicure is actually easier to do than a normal French manicure. I started off with 2 coats of OPI Done Out in Deco then just added 2 coats of Nina Ultra Pro Never Glum Plum (which is a dupe of Essie Smokin’ Hot) being careful to leave a gap on one side of the nail so Done Out in Deco could peek through. Super simple yet the look is super chic.

The only mistake I made the first time I attempted this look was I didn’t leave enough of a gap on the side of my nail. Make sure leave enough space so that the base color is easily seen!

There are more swatches below the jump. I’d love to know what you think about this take on the French manicure!

  1. Love the color combo. Great pics too!

  2. Great one Allie – I always had tried to do my side swipe manis the other way around – it’s looking and sounding so much easier to do them this way…wondering if I have steady enough hand to leave the side shade showing a little on my tips?

  3. This is so clever, I love it and your color combo!

  4. Kind of reminds me of a classic Chanel suit. Very dressy.
