L.A. Colors Atomic (+ a comparison to butter LONDON Slapper)

Most color trends are fairly predictable. But teal being a fall trend this year definitely caught me by surprise when I was doing my Fall 2012 Must Have Polishes post. I wanted to give this trend a try so I decided to wear a teal manicure to opening night at the Symphony. Kind of an odd choice for the event but I thought it went well with my black, nude and magenta dress. To my surprise I ended up loving this manicure. It added some interest to otherwise commonplace colors.

LA Colors Atomic is a polish I’ve had for awhile. I found it during a trip to the Dollar Tree but it is still part of LA Color’s Color Craze line and retails for just a dollar.

Atomic is a jelly creme hybrid green leaning teal. Because it has a bit of a jelly feel to it the formula is on the thin side. I used 3 coats in all my swatches.

As I was applying this polish I realized it reminded me a great deal of butter LONDON Slapper. Slapper is a bit brighter and has the slightest bit more blue. But they are very close. When I had them both on I could not tell a difference unless I stared at my nails.

Slapper is impossible to photograph. So, the comparison photos below the jump basically tell you nothing. I considered leaving them out but I wanted to give y’all a heads up that this is a good alternative to Slapper. The photo of the two bottles on my DIY nail polish rack where I used a flash shows how close the two are. Formula wise they do differ as Slapper is a true creme though I used three coats of Slapper as well.

Anyway, there are more swatches along with the comparison photos below the jump!

  1. i am really rocking teal this fall. Love the teal in the ChG Safari collection for fall. This is a nice one too. Slapper is (for me), in a summer catagory of teal. The less aqua are the teals that work for me in fall. I started wearing teal for fall transition colors last yr when I took up the Teal Toes cause for ovarian cancer awareness – Sept is OCA mo and teal is their identity color. Lost my mom to OC when she was quite young. Sadly we know not much more about this cancer than was known 25 yrs ago. It truly is a silent killer – most get no signs/symptoms until it’s very advance stage. Thanks for the comparison. I like the look of this LA Color – not a brand that is in my neck of the woods. I think I have seen it when in LA for medical at a CVS maybe. Another ‘fall’ teal that I like and think it’s still easy to find is Sally Hanson Complete Salon Manicure in Fairy Teal. I also like one teal (name escapes me) by Diamond Cosmetics – it’s a little brighter than Fairy Teal. We surely are seeing a ton of nail color this fall..nudes, dustier shades, teals as you covered. I am loving the two new OPI DS shades and many of my fav reds are always good for me in fall. Come Nov, I really get into the browns and caramels that I can wear.

    • I had a really, really bad experience with Fairy Teal back in the day. It gave me smurf nails that I just couldn’t shake! But I do need to try it again 🙂

  2. reminds me of OPI Fly from Nicki Minaj collection. Nice comparison

  3. My all time favorite teal is OPI Ski Teal We Drop. But I love butter LONDON Artful Dodger and Sally Hansen Fairy Teal, too. And Essie School of Hard Rocks. And Rescue Beauty Lounge 360. And I might need the NARS teal that’s coming out with the Andy Warhol collection. Okay. I might have a problem. Teal is my absolute favorite polish color.

  4. Orly Green With Envy is pretty much identical to BL Slapper. And the formula of the Orly wears better on my nails for some reason. Not sure why but Slapper chips on me after wearing it for just hours. It’s the only Butter polish that does it to me! Oh and Milani Teal is a great dupe for OPI Fly in case anyone can’t find it or wants to spend half the money. 🙂 I’m super excited Teal is in for fall cause it’s my absolute fav color. I used to hesitate to wear it cause even with base costs it’d stain my nails. I tried using a thin coat of Elmer’s glue (like what ppl are doing now for easy glitter removal) and it prevents staining completely! So reals are back in my life, full force. 🙂 thanks for your awesome blog, I love getting the email notifications of you girls posts.

    • Teal was never a polish color I reached for often but I’m loving it this fall! It feels fresh and different. I just might have to check out that Milani!

Thank you so much for your support 🙂
