Nail Art: 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2012

Phillip Lim’s Fall 2012 ready to wear collection was a big hit. He showed a mostly monochromatic structured pieces that were a bit minimalist and that more or less describes the nail art from his New York showing as well.

I saw a great picture of the nail art from the show in Harper’s Bazaar’s Fall/Winter 2012 Runway Report (picture below the jump) and knew I had to give it a try. 3D nail art has become a thing. Actual 3D nail art is a bit of a pain (see the Caviar manicure…). But this nail art gives the nail a bit of a 3D look without the actual 3D.

For exactly how I recreated the 3.1 Phillip Lim nail art check below the jump. I’d love to know your thoughts on this look!

What you need: A black creme polish, a gray creme polish (I found grays on the brownish side work best) and a white nail art polish or a striper brush and a white nail polish. I used Maybelline Express Finish in Black Onyx, OPI You Don’t Know Jacques and So Easy Stripe Rite in white.

How to:

  1. Paint all nails with the black creme polish.
  2. On one side of all the nails use the gray polish to create a stripe that covers about a third of the nail (see picture to the right)
  3. Using a white striper paint a “J” on the same side of the nail as the gray stripe.
  4. Top off the design with a top coat and that’s it!

Super simple to recreate! I love this because at first glance this doesn’t even look like nail art. It just looks like the nails are super shiny.

Of course this could be created with a different color family but I quite like the black and gray. It looks very chic yet interesting.

Let me know if you’re going to give this a try!
