Meet Alli’s Melmer

I finally have my nail polish stash organized! This has been a long process. I considered the ever popular Helmer from Ikea. I even went and looked at it in the store. It was just too big. Not to mention, I really didn’t want a separate piece of furniture to store my nail polish.

My current collection is just under 150 bottles of nail polish. The “Melmer” (aka 3 drawer organizer cube from the Craft Storage Collection) seemed like the perfect size. I picked this up at Michael’s. It was 40% off plus I had some sort of coupon. It set me back about $15 (compared to $40 for a Helmer!). Another benefit to the Melmer is they are stackable. So if (well, more likely when) my collection becomes too large for one Melmer, I can just stack another on top and double my storage.

Each drawer can hold up to 100 bottles of OPI nail polish. Using my super excellent math skills, that means a Melmer can hold about 300 bottles of polish. The drawers are rather slick. I put some Duck non adhesive shelf and drawer liner in each drawer. It keeps the bottles from moving around when I open and close the drawers.

The Melmer does require assembly. I am no where near handy, but I managed to put it together. It wasn’t extremely difficult.

Overall I am very pleased with my Melmer. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to organize their nail polish.

There are some before pictures plus pictures of the inside of each drawer below the jump.

Nail Polish storage failJust so you understand what I started with, I will include a “before” picture of my stash. What a mess! it was seriously driving me crazy, plus it’s best to store nail polish in dark places. Clear Rubbermaid containers are certainly not ideal. Not to mention, it was a headache to find any particular polish. I only knew what polishes I owned thanks to my nail polish spreadsheet. I was always worried I was going to break a bottle (or five) when I was digging through these containers looking for a specific polish.

Ok, onto the inside of my Melmer. The tan/off-white color on the bottom of the drawers is the Duck non adhesive drawer liners (which do come in different colors…I just happened to have the off-white kind around the house).

  1. I have four of these now! My collection is a bit larger, and I really probably could use at least one more to be able to squeeze my OPIs and China Glaze in them, but they do so well. And you can catch them on sale, also! I just love them as an alternative to the Helmer. I want to make myself another storage unit from this same line for my makeup.

    • After reading about the Helmer online I’m glad I got this instead. Apparently the drawers aren’t all that sturdy. I was thinking about picking up a Helmer for my makeup since a drawer full of eyeshadow isn’t all that heavy.

I love the Melmer for nail polish storage though. It’s perfect!
